Sankt Wendel Ostermarkt 2015

The Ostermarkt in Sankt Wendel was by far the best Easter market we have been to this year.

At the beginning of the market they had this beautiful sculpture that is made out of easter eggs. There were tons of stands selling a wide variety of items. When we first arrived we walked around and looked at all the stands to see what they had at each then on our second walk though we got some sort of bread that was in the shape of a bunny rabbit. I have no idea what it was called but it was slightly sweet and very delicious.

They had bunny rabbit and a few little rides and games for kids. There was a tent you could walk thorough and see mini scenes with rabbits. For example they had a bunny hospital where the bunnies were doctors. They were very creative and done very well. It was extremely crowded inside the tent so we didn't see them all but we saw quite a few.

Beautiful church in the middle of Sankt Wendel.

Giant Easter egg with an Easter scene onside of it.

I know all of you have heard about the famous Easter dragon.

This is a Painted ostrich egg that I purchased at the market.

For lunch we had some sort of sausage again I have no idea what I ate. We just went up to the stand asked if they spoke english and then pointed to the meat we wanted. After further research online I believe it was a weisswurst. Whatever it was it was very delicious. Whats funny about German sausage sandwiches is that the meat is about 8 inches long and the roll is only about 3 inches so you have a lot more sausage then you have roll. After lunch we walked around some more but it started to get crowded and it was cold and windy so we decided to get going. Before we could leave I had to get a Chimney cake. I had heard that they were very good so I had to try it myself. A chimney cake is similar to fried dough but it is wrapped about a large metal rod and cooked over coals till it is crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. The cake is hallow in the middle and ends up in a coil and stands about 10 inches tall. We had ours in cinnamon sugar and it was hot and delicious.

If we decided to go to any Easter markets next year this would be the one we would go back to. The others we had attended are no where near as great as this one was.

Trier Ostermarkt 2015

We've been Trier a bunch of times. We keep going back because it is close and they have different events going on during the year. Today we went to the Ostermarkt which is an Easter market. We had gone to one in our town earlier this month and was really disappointed by it but we decided to check out a few others to see if Easter markets are worth while.
The market was packed and it took us a while to get into the city center and find parking. We haven't attended a market on a Saturday and I knew it was going to be busy but I wasn't expecting the line to get into the city.
They had stand with flowers and fresh fruit. As well as stands with Easter decorations and jewelry and scarves.
We walked around the market for a bit and saw everything in about 30 minutes. It was quite small and again I was disappointed in it.

The best part of our trip was the bacon wrapped bratwurst we had for lunch it was delicious and was about a foot long.

The market had food stands and a wine area and a swing ride for children. All in all it was a nice little trip to get us out of the house but we only spent about an hour there. We won't be going back to the Trier Easter market in the future.

Ostermarkt in Speicher, Germany 2015

As we approach the Easter holiday many towns in Germany have an Ostermarkt which translates to Easter Market. Today in the town we live in they had a combination Ostermarkt and Flohmarkt which is a flea market. In Germany they have streets which are called family streets where you can drive but you also have families walking and such. Some look like roads and some are more like squares. Well the markets took place in most of the family streets towards the center of the town. For the flohmarkt portion they had many people set up along the side of the road with tables and stands selling antiques and other odds and ends. In the center of town they had an amusement park like ride for children. The type with the cars that go around in a circle like a merry go round. They also had some beer and food stands as well as a balloon dart game were you could win prizes.

Stand that sells cookies and candy

Easter stand with wreaths and bunnies and duck decorations

The market wasn't very big and I was a little disappointed with the lack of easter things considering it was an easter market. They had a lot more flea market stands then they had easter. Im definitely glad we took the time to check it out since all we had to do was walk outside our door. We plan to go to a few more Ostermarkt this month in combination with some other sights I have planned out.

Nordic Trail 2015

Spring has finally sprung in Germany. Today was a beautiful day with a high of 50 and a rare treat the sun was shining. We had to get out of the house an enjoy the weather so Bill and I went on a walk on the Nordic trail  that is near our house. We started our walk up the trail and there were no trail markers but there was only one way to go so we went. While we were walking we started hearing what sounded like a chain saw. It was. We eventually walked up on a guy chopping down the trees on the side of the path. After we passed by him I told Bill this is how horror movies start and he told me I was the one who wanted to leave the house. We kept walking straight we finally came to an intersection two ways had no signs but the other had the nordic trail sign that pointed to the trails. So we decided to go that way. We took the blue trail because it was shorter. We ended up on another unmarked trail but we managed to find our way back to the intersection where we started and made our way back to the car.

                                                                  View of the trail

A little shelter to get out of the rain or snow or just to relax for a little bit while on your hike.

Random Jesus statue on the trail. Maybe to pray you find your way back to the car?

This will definitely be something we will make a habit of doing. Next time I want to try out the red trail. It was a lovely free thing to do on a sunny day in Germany.
